Thoroughbred Horse Racing at Saratoga: 1863 to the Present, Presented by Charlie Kuenzel

During the summer of 1863, John Morrissey and others began to experiment with the possibility of having horse races in the village of Saratoga Springs. Since 1863 was at the height of the American Civil War, large numbers of horses were not available due to the war effort. Limited to only a few horses for the purpose of racing, a short race meet of a few days proved to be a very popular event that would be continued and improved upon even today.
